Mission
The ADB-Japan Scholarship Program funds postgraduate study in development-related fields at partner institutions in Asia and the Pacific. The programme page groups the fields into science and technology (including computer science, energy, engineering and health), economics, business and management, development studies, and law and public policy.
02
What you get
The scholarship pays full tuition, a monthly subsistence and housing allowance, an allowance for books and materials, medical insurance and travel expenses. Research scholars may get a thesis grant. The scholarship runs for one year and can be extended to a second year, so a master's lasts at most two years. It does not cover a spouse or other dependants.
03
Who can apply
You must be a national of an ADB borrowing member country that is also eligible for Japanese ODA scholarships, and Vietnam is on the list of eligible citizenships. You need a bachelor's degree with a superior academic record, at least two years of full-time work after it, and good spoken and written English. You must be 35 or younger when you apply, although the Government of Japan can waive this in exceptional cases. You cannot already be enrolled in a graduate programme, and you must be living and working in your home country.
04
What they look for
ADB considers only candidates who have been offered admission and endorsed by a participating institution. The institution assesses and shortlists, and ADB makes the final selection against criteria set by the Japanese executive director. Fields linked to ADB's Strategy 2030 or Japan's ODA priorities are favoured, as are women, applicants with lower financial capacity and people who have not studied abroad before. Each institution funds only its own approved fields of study.
05
The fine print
There are 26 participating institutions: 17 in Japan, and others in Hong Kong, India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and the University of Hawaii's East-West Center. Send your documents to your chosen institution at least six months before the start, and follow its deadline. After your studies you must return and work in Vietnam for at least two years, and you cannot work for the ADB Group for two years after you finish.
