Mission
Australia Awards Scholarships for Vietnam fund Vietnamese citizens to study a master's degree in Australia, by coursework or research. Priority fields include agriculture, digital transformation, education, environment and energy, governance and economic growth, gender equality, health, and regional stability and human rights. Applications from women, people with disability and other marginalised groups are encouraged.
02
What you get
The scholarship pays full tuition fees, a contribution to living expenses, return airfare, a one-off establishment allowance on arrival and overseas student health cover. Scholars also receive an introductory academic program, supplementary academic support and, for research students and coursework students with compulsory fieldwork, a fieldwork allowance. The amount of the living contribution is not published on the application pages. If your IELTS is below 6.5 overall or has a band below 6.0, you can receive English training in Vietnam for up to 12 months before you travel.
03
Who can apply
You must be a Vietnamese citizen living in Vietnam and applying from there. You also cannot be an Australian citizen or permanent resident. You need a formal undergraduate degree and at least 24 months of relevant full-time work in Vietnam. The 24 months are counted from the day your course finished on your transcript to 30 April of the intake year, and work done during your studies does not count. The work does not need to be continuous or with one employer, but it should be recent and relevant to your proposed field.
The minimum GPA is 6.5 for public sector applicants and 7.0 for Vietnamese NGO, private sector and international NGO applicants. State companies are treated as private sector. English tests are optional for public sector applicants and required for everyone else. People with disability and disadvantaged rural applicants have a lower bar: GPA 6.0 and optional English. Rural applicants need 12 months of full-time work, and applicants with disability need 12 months full-time or 24 months part-time. Public sector and disadvantaged applicants who skip the test must still sit a DFAT-funded IELTS if shortlisted.
04
What they look for
Assessors score three things: academic competence, your potential contribution to development in Vietnam, and professional and personal leadership, including relevant work experience.
05
The fine print
You must commit to working in Vietnam for at least two years after finishing your course. You may not be married to, engaged to or in a de facto relationship with an Australian or New Zealand citizen or permanent resident. Serving military members and people with criminal convictions or investigations for child protection or abuse offences are also barred. A second master's is not allowed, and a master's you started but did not finish counts as one. Business Administration is excluded. Omitting previous study makes you ineligible and bars you from future applications.
